At-Home Tips for Keeping Your Teeth White

Here are some easy but effective ways to keep your smile vibrant.

Whether you’ve just turned to our Columbia SC cosmetic dentist Dr. Joel Johnson for professional whitening or you’ve worked hard to keep your smile dazzlingly white, you are probably looking for tips on how to maintain your pearly whites for as long as possible. Keeping your smile radiant isn’t that difficult. Here are some simple ways to keep your smile looking its best.

Avoid dark foods and drinks

One of the best ways to keep your teeth white is to avoid any foods or drinks that could cause stains to buildup. Any food that is dark enough to stain something white is going to stain your teeth, so limit these foods as much as possible. Some of these stain-causing culprits include:

  • Black tea
  • Coffee
  • Red wine
  • Berries
  • Tomatoes
  • Soy sauce
  • Ketchup and mustard
  • Balsamic vinegar

Use a straw

If you’re going to drink dark beverages such as coffee, at least minimize the amount of exposure your teeth will have to this dark, stain-causing drink by using a straw. Drinking dark drinks through a straw won’t eliminate contact but it can certainly help.

Brush after each meal

How you clean your smile will play the biggest role in the health and appearance of your teeth and gums. Everyone should, at the very least, brush their teeth twice a day for a minimum of two minutes each time. This is a non-negotiable if you want a healthy smile; however, if you are looking to prevent stains from forming in the first place, you should brush your teeth (or at least rinse your mouth out) after each meal or snack so stains don’t even have the chance to form.

Use an electric toothbrush

The debate is still out as to whether an electric or manual toothbrush is better for your teeth. If you have trouble knowing just how much pressure to put on your teeth when cleaning, if you have trouble reaching your back teeth, or you have dexterity issues that make brushing a challenge, then you may want to use an electronic toothbrush. While a toothbrush will not be able to whiten teeth, it can scrub away surface stains effectively.
